How to Tell What Type of Headlights Your Vehicle Has

Before purchasing replacement headlights, upgrading to OEM LED headlights, or ordering a conversion harness, it's important to know what type of headlights your vehicle came with from the factory.

Many vehicles were offered with multiple lighting options depending on the trim level, and simply knowing the year and model isn't always enough. Two vehicles that look nearly identical can have completely different headlight wiring and connectors.

Here are several reliable ways to identify your factory headlight type.

The most reliable check is your VIN or the original window sticker. The next best check is the connector on the back of the headlight. A removable bulb such as H11, 9005 or 9012 usually means factory halogen, but a previous owner may have installed LED bulbs. Factory LED and HID headlights often have extra connectors or a control module on the housing.

1. Check the Original Window Sticker

One of the easiest ways to verify your factory equipment is by reviewing the vehicle's original window sticker.

Many manufacturers list lighting packages or optional equipment, such as:

• Halogen Headlights

• LED Headlights

• HID (Xenon) Headlights

• Adaptive Headlights

• LED Signature Lighting

If you don't have the original window sticker, many manufacturers and third-party VIN lookup websites allow you to retrieve it online using your VIN.

2. Look at the Bulb (If Your Headlights Use Replaceable Bulbs)

Halogen headlights almost always use replaceable bulbs.

If the manual specifies replaceable halogen bulb part numbers, your vehicle likely came with halogen headlights.
